At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox acknowledges the receipt of a letter from Erving on 22 May 1787 related to a claim of the descendants of General [William] Shirley to a portion of General Samuel Waldo's Penobscot lands (present-day Maine). Knox promises to investigate the claim, but does not think it will turn out to be valid.
