At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to Hull, commandant of West Point. Reports on public dislike of the Society of Cincinnati: "The [Country] people in general appear to dislike the Cincinnati- they are afraid that it contains some hidden design..." Reports that the General Court (of Massachusetts) have chosen a committee to investigate the society.
