At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the issue of imposts, which was brought up in the general court. States that "the Governor of Massachusetts has come out fully on the subject and strongly recommend a compliance with the late Resolutions of Congress on the subject of Finance" but the opposition "declare[s] they had rather risque any consequences then discharge so unjust a debt, even a Dissolution of the Union - What will be the consequences of such Madness & Folly, Time must determine."
