At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from "Head Quarters." Jonathan Trumbull Jr. writes, "If you have done with the perusal of the Proceedgs of the late Commissioners, the Commander in Chief wishes you to return them to Mr. Holden, for the Inspection of Genl. [William] Heath, who has been appointed to join you on the refusal of Genl. [Alexander] McDougall." In a post script on the address leaf, notes that the meeting of [commisioners] has been scheduled for 18 September at Tappan. "Public" written on address leaf.
