Writes, "I should esteem it a great favor if you would give an order to the Bearer, Capt. Stone, or Colonel [John] Crane, for one gallon of Linseed oil, for the purpose of marking the canteens, knapsacks, tents, & several other affairs in the regiment - In particular Colonel Putnam's Marquee, the roof of which was worn out, & mended, but requires a little painting." Colonel Putnam may refer to Colonel Israel Putnam, Jr., son of General Israel Putnam. Newhall signs as lieutenant colonel commanding the 5th Massachusetts regiment.
