At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Responds to his wife's letter chastising him for not writing (see GLC02437.01230). Reports that he is well and comments on the siege of Yorktown. Mentions that they stormed the British works with little loss the night before. Hopes to end the operation in 10-12 days.
