At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Colonel Wadsworth that William Richards, commissary of stores at Litchfield, Connecticut, intends to retire (malpractice charges were filed against Richards, see GLC02437.01110). Richards hopes to be able to remain in Connecticut, and Shaw solicits Wadsworth's recommendation on Richards's behalf. Written at camp near Dobbs Ferry.
