At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document gives the total of Lafayette's field artillery as 10 six pounders, 2 four pounders, 2 three pounders, and 2 five-and-a-half-inch howitzers. The artillery pieces were both captured and made for the Americans. One of the 6 pounders was taken from the Germans at the Battle of Bennington, several pieces were made by James Byers in both New York and Philadelphia, and the others came from various places. Title taken from docket. Docket in Samuel Shaw's hand, indentifying document as relating to Lafayette's artillery.
