At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses an upcoming visit from William Knox and gives thanks for an offer to take care of some business. Writes concerning further business ventures. Author of the letter possibly Leendert de Neufville, most likely related to the de Neufvilles of the merchant firm de Neufville & Son. Stain on address leaf where letter was sealed. Watermarked "D & CB LAU W."
