At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Report of the rout of the rebels
by Averell at Droop Mountain. "…he encountered Genl Echols, Pattons & Jacksons forces entrenched on the summit of Droop Mountain…after a severe action the rebels were routed completely all of his wounded falling into our hands. Our loss in killed & wounded about one hundred Gen Averell moved on Lewisburg on the seventh (7) as arranged"
