At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Handwritten telegram to Brigadier General Scammon from Colonel Paxton. Talks of someone selling goods for Confederate money and states he told General George Crook about it but nothing was done. Informs that $50 worth of goods were sold to a Mr. Rucker for $200 in Confederate money. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph. Water damaged. Written in Camp Piatt
