At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lieutenant and Acting Assistant Quarter Master Gardner writes to Kennedy, Lieutenant and Acting Assistant Adjutant General for the 1st Provisional Brigade, 23rd Ohio. Asks that a Board of Survey examine the loss of quarter master and commissary stores since 15 May 1862 on route from the East River to Flat Top Mountain, West Virginia.
