Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram to Colonel Paxton from an unknown soldier tells of some cavalry men shot by guerillas at Birch River. States the other camp said they cannot send ammunition because they too are expecting an attack. With autograph endorsement signed in initials by Scammon stating, "Capt Door reports that he thinks the troops about Sommerville are more scared than hurt."
