At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram from Colonel Paxton to Captain James L. Botsford asking if he can come to Charleston tomorrow morning and return to camp in the evening. With note in another hand at bottom. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph. Year inferred from similar documents in the collection. Bottom half of sheet has been ripped off. Written in Camp Piatt.
