At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Telegram from Colonel John T. Toland to Captain James L. Botsford, the Assistant Adjutant General, informing that he must go to Cincinnati, Ohio tomorrow on leave. States that Lieutenant Colonel Hines will be in command at the post. With autograph endorsement signed in initials by Brigadier General Scammon ordering that Colonel Toland must stay at Fayette for a few more days. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph. Year inferred from similar documents in the collection and from Scammon's rank.
