At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes to General Cox commanding the division in Charleston, West Virginia to say that he will move tomorrow if possible. States they only have 41 tents for the brigade and that they can have 10 days rations at Raleigh by Wednesday. Only dated the 6th, year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
