At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio regiment writes to General Cox, the division commander at Charleston, West Virginia to report that he has sent out scouting parties and will forward information as soon as he has it. States that he has heard of troops at Bruhy[?] Mountain and Muddy Creek but nothing is exact. Year inferred from Scammon's rank.
