At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John Hunt encloses a draft (not included) from the Metropolitan National Bank in New York City for three hundred dollars. Relates his sympathy that Henry J. Hunt, his nephew, did not obtain a military post at Baltimore, Maryland. Notes, "it may be well that you get so good a post as Charleston... " Written on Merchants National Bank stationery.
