At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to Union General Thomas concerning the various meetings of the armies of the Union. Writes that he does not believe General William T. Sherman wanted to break down the Society of Army of the Cumberland by having all the armies meet in Chicago next December. Discusses the scheduling of the various meetings. Mentions some ill will or dissatisfaction among the members of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland. States that he believes General Sherman was trying to please everyone with the arrangement of the meetings.
