At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document reads in full: "Joseph Ford of F company 34th regiment, Ark Infty C.S.A., residing in Benton Co. Ark. having been paroled with the approval of the proper authority, is permitted to return to his home, not to be disturbed by the United States authorities, so long as he observes his parole and the laws in force, where he may reside."
