Written from the line of battle before Chattanooga. He writes that he's been in the same position for the last fifteen days. They opened on the enemy last night but he doesn't know if they are still shelling this morning, as he is too far away to hear. Ward reports to his sister that he's heard from their brother Marshall who has come down with dysentery and has lost a lot of weight. Writes that Marshall is anxious to get back but Edward is afraid he'll return before he is well. Discusses his affections for Miss Mollie. Requests that he be sent some undershirts, drawers, No. 8 boots, handkerchiefs, and a pair of gloves. In a post script note he writes: "both sides are heavily reinforcing and the greatest battle of the war will be fought here."

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
