At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Plate 34." A scene behind the breastworks. Officers and men are grouped about the guns, while some of the latter are playing cards, cooking, and amusing themselves generally. In the center of the picture a squad of prisoners is seen coming in from the front under guard. Actual size of the image without the margins is 27.7 x 40.3 cm.
