At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed on mount, 3/4 seated in civilian clothing. With short biographical description on verso. Inscription on verso reads: "Maj. Gen. W.W. Averill. He led the advance on Manassass of Gen. McClellan. Took part in the famous Stoneman's Raid toward Richmond. Maj. Gen. for gallant services at Moorfield, Va."
