Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists the names and ranks of the fifty-six Union men killed by Confederate bushwhackers under the command of William "Bloody Bill" Anderson. Anderson, under whose tutelage Jesse James fought, was killed and decapitated less than a month later. Second page signed by Lieutenant Edwin Darrow certifying the list. Very faded.
