At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Humorously tells sister-in-law that the families of the New York congressmen James Kent, Thomas Oakley and Edward Curtis have been "put in a commotion" regarding a lost atlas. Reports that a dispatch has been sent to Europe to follow Edward Curtis through France, Germany, Switzerland, Como, Rome, and Naples. States that he will notify George Curtis (possibly his biographer, lawyer George Ticknor Curtis) to terminate the dispatch to Europe if Curtis can meet Paige at a New York Hotel. Only the final three pages of this document survive.
