At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Remarks that she would not have passed through Winchester, Virginia without visiting her, but her mother was expecting her arrival at her the home of her sister-in-law (Eleanor Madison Hite). Relays that they are now on their way to Orange, Virginia. Discusses some personal matters and mutual acquaintances. Talks of Sally Pemberton's accident. Hopes to see the recipient in Orange.
