At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lieutenant Babcock informs Bedel that he has men from the 11th Infantry under his command who need to be paid. Lists five such men. A signed note by Bedel on the bottom requests that another officer peruse the list. Letter written shortly after the War of 1812.
