At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the case of Lieutenant Joseph Duncan, who was transferred from the 17th to the 19th regiment. Details on the case are not given, although it appears to concern Duncan's rank. Parker expresses that the secretary of war does not see "any cause of complaint on the part of the officers of the 17th Infy." Parker was assistant inspector general in the war department.
