Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes details related to the British 80th and 82nd Regiments. Reports that Mr. Stapleton purchased the Captain Lieutenancy in the 17 Dragoons, and Captain Lieutenant Tyler assumed the position of the late Captain Maxwell, who died at Bristol. States that ensign George Stewart purchased Mr. Graham's Lieutenancy, and ensign George Walker Stewart succeeded Lieutenant Snodgrass. Relates that the Duke of Hamilton was nominated as an ensign.
