At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

To Johnathan Lawrence, Treasurer of Connecticut. Written by Ellsworth as a member of the Pay-Table Committee, which was responsible for Connecticut's finances during the Revolution. Receipt says to pay slightly over 51 pounds to James Rice by the hand of Peter Colt for building and fitting the Row Galley "Whiting." Countersigned on verso by Isaac Beers saying he received the money for Rice. On verso, one of the dockets states that the payment was audited on 1 September 1777 by E. Plummer.
