At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses at length the poor state of politics and the monetary system. Remarks that he does not know how to answer all the demands made upon him and he has only a negative view of things to come. Advises Knowles to not let this information dampen his spirits or stop him from finishing his education. Finishes with a poem of Cato.
