At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter addressed to Captain Joshua Jacob. Informs that he is well. Mentions that his father did not give him the money he felt he was due. He states, "To with the smiles of god I shall live without it and am as many would think a bastard and not one of the family." He asks Jacob to send this letter to his sisters.
