At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Petition of representation for Frothingham stating that he served in the United States army during the Revolutionary War as "Sergeant in Capt Chadwick's Company in 1775," then as Sergeant in Colonel Henry Knox's Regiment of Artillery, and finally as Principal Field Commissary of Military Stores of the American Army" until the end of the war. States he has not received the same commutation of land as other officers of the same line received. Requests that he be reimbursed accordingly.
