Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by 38 other men. Petition to the members of the Massachusetts Bay Council and the House of Representatives requesting that a port and a naval office be established upon the Kennebeck River (present day Kennebec River, Maine). States that the naval office at Boothbay is very inconvenient for trade since it is a great distance to Boothbay or Falmouth.
