At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appointing Jonathan Humphry a lieutenant colonel in the Connecticut militia. Also signed by George Wyllys as secretary. Seal of Connecticut affixed. Partially printed. There were multiple Jonathan Humpries from Simsbury, Connecticut who served during the American Revolution. The Jonathan Humphry who died in 1778 is the author of the letter and the subject of the commission. He was a lawyer.
