Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document in which Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council orders payment for one year's interest on St. Clair's depreciation certificate, due 10 April 1784. Signed by Irving as V.P. An autograph note on the verso signed by "I.S. Carnahan" indicates that the payment was received in full from the treasurer, David Rittenhouse. Countersigned by John Nicholson, Robert Morris's financial partner
