At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

With an AES by Stuart referring the note to Gen. Lomax. Lee forwards a report of a build-up at Culpepper Court House and orders "Keep every one on the alert." Letter dated at 5 1/4 P.M. Stuart has underscored in his own note: "Vigilance is the word." Letter also mentions conflicting reports of enemy movement.
