At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The danger of over consumption of timber is serious. States east of Ohio generally have denuded forests. The west and northwest up to the Rocky Mountains are "all chiefly prairie and an almost treeless territory," depending on the east for wood, particularly Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. He examines timber in the Pacific West and in Canada. Inserted is an advertisement by F. L. Ricketts for the North Mountain House in Ganoga Lake, Shickshinny P. O. Luzerre Co. Pa. dated 1879.
