At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

They have all been sick with colds, thus the reason for not writing. She continues to mourn the death of her sister as she imagines him doing. She wishes she could have been there or had some last communication with her. She wonders if there is a mystery associated with her death.
