At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses Duke of Wellington's heroism during the July 18, 1815 Battle of Waterloo. Describes circumstances surrounding death of Sir Alexander Gordon. Gordon was Wellington's aide de camp. Lawrence was a British portrait artist. Mrs. Wolff was the subject of one of Lawrence's portraits.
