Written by von Steuben in retirement after the Revolution to William North as a gentleman farmer in upstate New York. North was von Steuben's aide-de-camp from 1779-1783. Von Steuben invites North to live in New York City for the winter while his house is being built. Says Hamilton is leaving for Philadelphia in three days and that North would be a perfect to take Hamilton's place in his circle of friends. Says the English and Spanish Navies do not know if they are at war or peace. Says "To the devil with Politics of Europe and America," and to sow his seed and then come to New York and share a leg of mutton.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
