Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also signed by John Winchester, Jr. Trowbridge and Winchester had been accused by Royal Governor of Massachusetts Joseph Dudley of attacking him, and he had pressed charges. The two carters deny the charges and say that Dudley was the aggressor. The men were discharged 6 November 1706.
