Celebrating the Union victory at Corinth and explaining "the magnitude of the stake" involved there. "The possession of West Tennessee, and perhaps even the fate of operations in Kentucky," had depended on this victory. Says his army had been outnumbered two to one, lists dead and wounded on both sides, and thanks his men. The Battle of Corinth was not as decisive a victory as Rosecrans claims, and the Union was badly outfought on the first day. However, they rallied and were able to prevent the Confederates from achieving any strategic objectives, and did force them to retreat.
