At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Issued by Captain Campbell, Assistant Adjutant General, based on the orders of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman. Discusses charges against and sentences dictated to members of the United States Colored Troops. Charges vary, including desertion, inciting mutiny, and theft, among others. Sentences include confinement involving hard labor for various lengths of time and dishonorable discharge.
