At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Washington's Head Quarters at Tappan" circa 1780. Depicts a distant view of Washington's Head Quarters at Tappan, New York where Major John Andre was tried in 1780. In the forefront of the image three cows drink from the Hudson River. Caption notes, "the house where andre was tried." Engraved by Samuel Valentine Hunt after a painting by Cornelius Ver Bryck (misspelled as Verboyck). Printed by W. Pate.
