At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by the Office of Printers to the Senate. Includes an introduction by Thomas Ewbank, Commissioner of Patents. Contains sections on financial and statistical aspects of the patent office, inventions and claims, examiners' and machinists' reports, the origin and progress of invention, the motors, proposed applications of the patent fund, historical notices of inventors and patentees, and the propulsion of steamers. Contains reference to and a description of Abraham Lincoln's patent for an improved method of lifting vessels over shoals (pages 96, 242) (See also GLC01304).
