At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Fulfills a request for a prospectus of the course of study available at Washington College, where Lee served as president. In a letter on the verso of the printed prospectus, Lee comments that he was obliged for Site's 1859 report to the Ohio Legislature and writes: "I hope the country will yet retain the system of Government established by our forefathers." Two printed pages of the prospectus, and one page handwritten letter.
