At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The envelope has 2 images in the upper left hand corner there is a image of George Washington with a caption that reads "Corner Stone of the Federal Union." In the upper right hand corner there is a image of an enslaved person, with a caption of "Corner Stone of the Southern Confedercy."
