At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Chase, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, responds to a letter from Jones, a judge and former United States Representative from Pennsylvania. Discussing the civic role of politicians, states "In my public life hitherto I have never had but one controlling rule of action; ascertain as truly as possible the duty of the present hour & then do it fearlessly ... "
