At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"I am in immediate communication with Genl. Buell by telegraph. I cannot leave here to meet him, till Fort Henry, New Madrid and Ponton are connected by telegraph. Have strong parties at work to effect this. Genl. [Samuel R.] Curtis is again calling for reinforcements & has drawn in his reserves, thus exposing his depot, which is threatened. I want him in reach to direct him by telegraph."
